Mick Mulvaney Forgot To Pay Payroll Tax

Mick Mulvaney – Donald Trump’s top pick for the job of budget control at the White House – has failed to pay over $15,000 in taxes due on the payroll of someone who worked for him over 10 years ago. Many in the senate suggest that this means he should not be able to have the position after all.

It is, after all, what happened in 2009 when Senator Tom Daschle was revealed to owe over $100,000 in back taxes. He decided to withdraw from being the head of the Health And Human Services Department for President Obama. However, former Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner failed to pay around $40,000. He kept his job, but did have to pay the money back.

Mulvaney for his part has said that he has now paid the outstanding taxes (although he has not paid any interest on the sum). It seems unlikely that he will step away from any position in office that President Trump will offer him in the coming days.

Is it fair for someone in such a position of authority to be able to get away without paying any tax when everyone else has to? Even though Mulvaney has now paid the money back, he didn’t do it until an investigation was carried out and it was discovered. So if no one had told him to do it, would he still have paid?

This is now something that Donald Trump will need to think carefully about.
